This week: A few fisheye and rangefinder photos that I just developed. Still love the way film captures colors.

About a week ago I saw Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, which I highly recommend if you’re a fan of the first movie or director Guillermo del Toro. Like so many movies, the key to everything is an object — a crown in this case — that holds the power to determine who will rule the world. As a plot device, it’s pretty played, especially when it’s supposed to carry a movie that otherwise showcases del Toro’s hyper-creative imagination.

Why do so many movies, especially action movies, revolve around the power of a single object? I was thinking on that when I started posting pictures this week that tell a story sans people. The best answer I could come up with is that it all owes to The Bomb, since comic books came of age during the Cold War and the threat of mutual annihilation. But if that’s even half-right, shouldn’t our entertainment be ready for new dilemmas?

Sure enough, a couple days later I saw The Dark Knight, which contains no hint of this narrative crutch. It’s a far superior movie, not just to Hellboy, but to any action movie I’ve ever seen.

From my old office at the Austin bureau of the Washington Post. The placard shows Ann Richards, the late former governor of Texas.

Calling this Object Week. For day one, a really interesting article on sensory perception in the New Yorker: ‘The Itch.’
