Rain Storm (#3)

On Flickr

I pulled up to my apartment one night in the middle a heavy downpour and decided to wait it out. To kill time, I set my Optio Wpi’s macro focus to about 2 inches and fired through the window into the rain.

Two other versions: #1 and #2.

God bless Molly Ivins

“Texas House of Reps”
On Flickr

Dave Mann has a perfectly wry post today on the Texas Observer Blog about the Clinton campaign’s ‘endorsement’ from beyond the grave.

At the end he links to a typically fiery column from the late Molly Ivins in which she vows never to support Hillary: ‘I’d like to make it clear to the people who run the Democratic Party that I will not support Hillary Clinton for president.

‘Enough. Enough triangulation, calculation, and equivocation. Enough clever straddling, enough not offending anyone. This is not a Dick Morris election.’

The whole thing is great. It reminds me of how much I regret never getting to meet Molly (I joined the Observer staff just days after she died) and also why I gravitated toward Obama.

Post-script: The above photo is supposed to appear on relatively soon on some political blog sponsored by Kenneth Cole. Yeah, you got me. Will link if/when that comes through.

Spoke too soon yesterday. This is my favorite photo of Amanda. Love how the compositional elements align.

Obama Through the Signs

On Flickr

Some links from this past week:

1. This essay by Andrew Olmstead, published at Obsidian Wings posthumously after his death in Iraq, is pretty remarkable.

2. I’ve been interning once a week at the Rayko Photo Center since late November. When I got back from Germany I had a new boss named Audrey, and it was only this week that we both figured out we have Flickr accounts. Turns out she has some of the strangest photos I’ve seen online, but in a good way. Check those links out.

3. My friend and former Observer colleague Patrick Michels has a real nice post and photo up on the Observer blog that captures Obama’s connection with Austin.

4. Last week Matthew Yglesias linked to my ‘Obama the Cowboy’ photo, and from there it kind of took off around the internets. A list of places it’s appeared just since Super Tuesday:

Alex Balk

‘Viva Obama!’ (at about the 1:33 mark)

It was also linked on quite a few message boards, including MetaFilter, but my favorite was Buffistas.org, a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fansite.

Best Picture of Chris Ever

Round Rock, TX
On Flickr

I’ve taken a lot of pictures of Chris and his band, Golden Bear, over the years, but this will always be my favorite. We were at a Round Rock Express minor league baseball game.

Obama photo to appear in L.A. exhibit

“Obama the Cowboy”

This photo from Austin last February, which has been popular lately on Flickr and Matthew Yglesias’ blog, will appear in a museum exhibition later this year. More details when I have them. Exciting stuff, either way.
